Free field employee tracking apps: compare plans and limits

Compare NexaSync, FieldSense and Connecteam free offers. Understand employee limits, GPS features, support and what remains after a trial.

About this comparison: Published by NexaSync, which has a Free plan and is included below. Plan descriptions come from linked official pages checked on 14 September 2026. This is a plan comparison, not a hands-on tracking test.

A free field employee tracking app can be a useful starting point for a small team. But “free” might mean an ongoing plan with user limits, a limited version without the location feature you need, or a trial that ends after a few days.

Compare what remains available after the trial, how many people count towards the limit and what changes when your team grows. Start with the three options below.

Three free-plan options to check

ProductPublished free offerImportant boundary
NexaSyncFree for up to three employeesClient visits, advanced controls and expense review are Pro capabilities; check the plan matrix.
FieldSenseCore system advertised as free for up to 10 usersPremium features and service charges are separate considerations.
ConnecteamSmall Business plan for eligible small teams; a separate Limited plan also existsIts Limited plan is not equivalent to the Small Business plan for GPS features.

NexaSync Free: a starting point for up to three employees

NexaSync Free covers core attendance and location visibility for up to three employees, including maps and timelines. It is separate from the 14-day Pro trial. If you need client visit forms, expense review or Pro controls, compare the paid plan rather than assuming everything seen in the trial stays free. Source: NexaSync Free and Pro comparison.

A sensible evaluation is one normal workday: can each employee record attendance, and can the manager find the latest available updates? Check how NexaSync presents employee locations and the timestamp associated with an update.

FieldSense: check the core offer and service terms

FieldSense’s FAQ describes an ongoing free core system for up to 10 users, with premium functionality and charging above the limit. It distinguishes email support on Free from premium support and lists assisted setup among charged services. Confirm which charges apply to your chosen onboarding arrangement. Its website lists location, attendance and visit workflows. Ask the vendor to identify the exact features included in your free account, then test that entitlement with your team. Source: FieldSense’s feature overview.

Connecteam: distinguish its two free plans

Connecteam’s pricing FAQ describes a Small Business plan for teams with fewer than 10 employees. It separately describes a Limited plan for up to 30 users. The comparison matrix includes location stamps and Breadcrumbs GPS tracking for Small Business but does not include those features in Limited. Confirm eligibility and the current feature matrix before choosing a plan for field tracking. Source: Connecteam pricing and plan comparison.

A free time clock is not automatically a free route-tracking tool. Check the specific location workflow you need, then evaluate it in the plan that will remain active after any trial.

A free trial is a different offer

A trial lets you evaluate paid functionality for a limited period. It does not establish that your business can keep using those functions at no cost. Unolo, for example, advertises a 14-day trial on its pricing page. NexaSync also offers a 14-day Pro trial alongside its separate Free plan. Unolo trial details · NexaSync plan details.

Before starting, note the trial end date and the plan you intend to retain. Ask the vendor to show what an employee and manager will see after the trial ends.

Five questions before choosing a free app

  1. Who counts as a user? Ask whether managers, administrators and inactive employees count towards the free allowance.
  2. Which location function is included? A location captured at check-in, the latest recorded position and a route history are different functions.
  3. What remains after the trial? Confirm attendance, history, exports and any forms you need.
  4. What support is included? Check how to get help with permissions, phone settings and missing updates.
  5. What happens at the next team size? Ask for the cost at your expected headcount, including whether a paid upgrade charges for everyone.

Plan for the fourth or eleventh employee

The cheapest starting point may not be the best long-term fit. Suppose a three-person team adds a fourth employee and also needs visit forms and expense review. It should evaluate the paid workflow as a whole, rather than choose only on the initial free allowance.

Equally, a larger team should not choose NexaSync Free expecting the three-employee limit to expand. Compare a suitable paid plan or another vendor’s eligible free offer. The broader software shortlist helps when your requirements go beyond a free attendance and location tool.

Test a normal working day

Use the same phones, sites and manager review process your team will use after rollout. Confirm that employees understand what information is recorded and that location settings are configured for the intended workflow. Treat a missing or old update as something to investigate, not an automatic conclusion about an employee.

Use our five-day pilot checklist to structure the evaluation. If your immediate need is handling missed entries, start with the attendance exceptions guide.
