A $100 hold after adding your card to ChatGPT Ads?

Added your card but haven’t run any ads? Here’s how to check whether the amount is temporarily blocked or has been charged, and when to contact your bank.

Is the money blocked or charged?

Check the transaction status in your bank app. A pending hold and a completed payment need different follow-up steps.

A hold temporarily reduces your available balance or credit limit. The money has been reserved, but the payment has not been collected. When the hold is released, that amount becomes available again. Visa explains these payment stages.

How long does the hold take to clear?

OpenAI says the hold may remain visible for up to seven days, depending on your bank. If it is still pending after seven days, contact your bank and Ads support. If your bank says the payment is completed, ask support to check it without waiting.

One advertiser reported ₹9,903 after adding a card, despite no campaign running. They later reported a reversal after seven days.

What to check now

  1. Confirm whether any ads have actually run. Check the right account, campaign, date range and time zone. If ads have served, ₹0 is not conclusive: OpenAI says reporting can trail delivery by up to seven hours. A recent payment can cover spend not yet visible. Review the reporting-delay guidance.
  2. Get the bank’s exact transaction status. Ask: “Is this a pending authorization or a posted/settled payment?” Do not rely solely on an SMS or a lower available balance. “Unbilled” can also describe a posted purchase not yet included in a monthly bill. If the label is unclear, have the issuer explain it. Visa directs transaction questions to the card issuer.
  3. Match the records. Save the amount, currency, merchant description and date. Look for a matching receipt or invoice in your billing records. Note whether the entry followed card setup or later campaign activity.
  4. Check available funds as well as transaction history. A released hold can stop reserving money without becoming a separate refund payment. Ask the bank to confirm release if the display is ambiguous. See authorization reversals.
  5. Escalate anything unexplained. Contact Ads support if it persists beyond the documented window, is completed without matching spend, or cannot be identified. If you do not recognize the transaction at all, contact your issuer promptly instead of assuming it is routine verification.

Common questions

Is the $100 a verification fee?

Verification is described as a reservation, not a fee. Confirm your transaction’s status. Official billing explanation.

Why do people mention ₹9,903 or ₹10,000?

₹9,903 is the amount in the September Reddit report; ₹10,000 is a rounded description. Neither establishes a fixed India price. Use the amount and currency shown by your issuer when requesting help.

Is releasing a hold the same as refunding a charge?

No. A release frees reserved funds; a refund returns a payment already collected. Ask your bank whether the hold has been released or a refund is pending. Visa’s payment definitions.

Do I need to launch a campaign to recover the money?

No ad purchase is specified for release. Don’t launch a campaign to test it; ask support about the existing entry. Billing guidance.

What if I did not receive an OTP or 3-D Secure prompt?

A missing OTP does not, by itself, mean the transaction was unauthorized. Visa documents both background authentication and prompts such as OTPs. If you are concerned, ask your bank how this transaction was authenticated.

Is ChatGPT Ads officially available in India?

Yes. OpenAI announced the self-service expansion on 31 August 2026, and its current availability list includes India.
